Safety Checklist
Use this checklist to evaluate and plan for key home modifications that improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for aging in place. These updates help reduce fall risks, promote independence, and support daily routines.
Entrances & Exits
- Install wheelchair ramps or threshold ramps at all main entrances.
- Ensure outdoor and indoor railings are securely fastened and easy to grip.
- Widen doorways to at least 32" for wheelchair accessibility.
Bathrooms
- Install grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub.
- Replace traditional tubs with walk-in tubs or roll-in showers.
- Use non-slip flooring and mats to prevent falls.
Stairways & Hallways
- Install a stair lift if stairs are difficult to climb.
- Add safety railings along all staircases and long hallways.
- Improve lighting in all walking areas.

- Install lever-style handles for easier use of faucets and doors.
- Use appliances and tools with large, easy-to-read controls.
